Hello, I am Brenda Valdez.

About me

I'm obsessed with language, art, and cognition, which I think is another way to say I'm just obsessed with humanity.

It all started when I got back in touch with art; in art I discovered so many things I didn't think at first were related to computing.
Then I started wondering about what makes us human.

Thanks to dance I found out there's more knowledge than just what goes on in our brain, but our whole body is a machine of perception and movement that learns and behave with more than pure mental understanding. Thanks to writing I learned that language is one of these things connected deeply with humanity; Chomsky would call it an instinct rather than a learned ability. Thanks to reading I grasped that the complexity of humanity is more than only their ideas and reasoning but about the quality of perceiving oneself, the fact that there is something it is like to be us.

However, with that being said, I can’t stress enough the fact that, from all the beauty I've encountered in art, there's nothing as mesmerizing as computing.

So, of course, one can say, Artificial Intelligence is the way to go. But I also find a lot of beauty in pattern finding for data science and the amazing spread of information that web programming allows. You can check what I know how to do in the skills page, or what I actually do in the projects page. Otherwise, following are the languages I speak and a fun set of things I'd like you to know about me.

Things I do other than computing

So as you might guess, in my free time I like to write, read, and dance, which makes me feel in touch with art, beauty, and humanity.

You might find me reading at a coffee shop. My favorite book is Bluets by Maggie Nelson, which I think is the most beautiful depiction one can make of desire through language, since to be in love with a color is the most abstract form of loving I can think of. I might be writing too, I've been doing it ever since I was 12 years old, which was my first contact with art and has led me to wonder about the use and impact of art.

I also enjoy going to museums as well. My favorite paintings are La Danse by Matisse and Primavera by Botticelli, and my favorite sculpture is Le Penseur by Rodin (I have a thing for all Rodin pieces). You might also find me attending classical dance performances, but most likely I'm watching contemporary or neoclassical pieces. Occasionally, I'll be performing myself; the dance I love to do is contemporary dance (and of course I'm smitten with Pina Bausch). I love contemporary art, because it allows us to wonder what art actually is.

I'm also a bit of a runner and I like yoga too, but that's just because I think using your body is a rather amazing experience.
